After the official closure of the isolated case of Newcastle registered in July of this year in the municipality of Anta Gorda, in Rio Grande do Sul, and the communication of the Brazilian health authorities to the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), some countries lifted restrictions on poultry products from Rio Grande do Sul. Among the markets that resumed operations are Russia, South Africa and Peru, strengthening the sector's international trade.
According to information released by the Poultry Organization of RS (Asgav/Sipargs), the quick resolution of the case was the result of the joint efforts of federal, state and private sector authorities. "All the dedication of those involved and the interaction between the production sector and health and inspection authorities were decisive in eradicating the disease and demonstrating to the world the effectiveness of our system", stated José Eduardo dos Santos, executive president of the entity.
Poultry production in Rio Grande do Sul is among the three largest in Brazil and has a long history of exporting to several international markets, consolidating the credibility of its production chain. According to Asgav, joint action with the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) was essential to meet health requirements and ensure control of the case.
The use of strict protocols, technological tools and precise mapping of the affected area allowed for quick and effective action by official bodies. Now, with the lifting of embargoes by some countries, the poultry sector in Rio Grande do Sul awaits the end of restrictions still maintained by markets such as China, Mexico and Chile.
